Now for most of my life I have been called on of these two, but what some don’t realise is there is actually a big difference between these two clans. So how can you tell the difference? Are you a Nerd or a Geek?
Firstly let’s take a look at the Geek Clan.
Geek is defined by trusty google as “an unfashionable or socially inept person” (not a compliment but hey.) but also “a knowledgeable and obsessive enthusiast” (now that’s more like it.)
To address the first part and I am generalising here, geeks tend to have a reputation for being socially inept and introverted but those who wrote this definition clearly aren’t geeks themselves because if you get two of us in a room good luck getting us to shut up ! And as for the unfashionable comment, it’s not our fault if people can’t see the fashion genius behind wearing Youtuber merch, or a gaming shirt or having the Key to Erabor on your keyring.
The second part is more accurate, geeks often have an amazing, crazy almost insane love and obsession with their chosen topics (My speciality is Tamriel and my other topics of choice are: Middle Earth, Stargate and numerous other games and books that I guarantee you haven’t heard of.) One of my best friends had memorised the one ring’s inscription in black speech another loves Doctor Who almost too much (if that’s even possible). There is nothing quite as beautiful as seeing a geek engaged in a topic they are passionate about.
I must confess my own personal bias, I personally identify as a geek so apologies if I am not as accurate in my explanation of our cousins the nerds.
Now we take a look at the other great awkward clan, the Nerd clan.
Nerd once again is defined by almighty google as “a foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious.” (Again not exactly a compliment from google.) But the second half is more complimentary a “single-minded expert in a particular technical field.”
There are some definite similarities between Geeks and Nerds. Both are known for their socially inept and introverted nature. However, the second part is where the two differ. To be a nerd is to be intelligent, extremely smart and driven in a particular field. So they may not know how to speak Elvish but they know how to do complex equations.
Whether you’re a Nerd or a Geek we all share the same great passion for our specialist areas whether it’s a fantasy language like Dwarven or Algebra or some other topic. And we all share a strange somewhat introverted nature that seems to push us together. And most of the time you can spot us across the street (we’re the ones with headphones in a Pokémon tee shirt, the one ring round our neck and some crazy dragon slaying fantasy going on in our heads.
So which clan do you belong to? Are you a Nerd or a Geek or something else altogether?
