I have not played an assassins creed game since the 3rd game so when better to return to the series then with Assassins Creed Origins? The game was released at the end of 2017 and is based in Ancient Egypt between the dates 49-47 BC.
The setting firstly is beautiful, the contrasts between the vast and barren deserts and the lush fertile banks of the Nile and the amazingly colourful buildings of the Egyptians and Greeks makes for an amazing world to immerse yourself in.
The historical setting is also a turbulent time at this point in history Egypt under the rule of the Ptolemaic Kingdom a greek nation descended from the generals of Alexander The Great. Alexandria became the capital city and a major center of Greek culture and trade. Meanwhile to gain recognition by the native Egyptian population, the rulers named themselves the successors to the Pharaohs. The later Ptolemies took on Egyptian traditions by marrying their siblings, had themselves portrayed on public monuments in Egyptian fashion and participated in the Egyptian religion including the last Pharaoh Cleopatra. The Ptolemies had to fight native rebellions and were involved in foreign and civil wars that led to the decline of the kingdom and its conquest by Rome. (Thank you Wikipedia!)
Assassins Creed origins clearly demonstrates the clash of cultures from the ancient Greek cities to the ancient Egyptian temples. Egypt is an amazing and iconic setting that has not really seen much representation in video games before and provides unique challenges and interactions for us players to encounter.
Bayek and Aya (the two main protagonists) are also great characters, from their fleeting moments together to the months spent apart the characters have been written well and their off and on relationship is well represented in the game. As effectively the founders of the Assassins creed it is amazing to play as the somewhat more reluctant Bayek who has been drawn into a much larger series of events by his desire for vengeance.
As someone who has not really been to interested in the Assassins Creed games I have found Origins to be an amazing introduction. The combat is fluid and easy to pick up and the use of the different types of bows adds an extra level of strategy to taking out your enemies. The quests and main story so far has been engaging and the exotic setting is immersive and fascinating.
I have not yet completed the main quest but 10 hours into the game and I look forward to continuing the story and continuing to uncover the ancient secrets hidden deep beneath the sands.
